Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement declaring that “there is no place for Waqf law in the Constitution” has ignited a nationwide debate over religious trusts.
Speaking at BJP headquarters Modi argued that the legal framework governing Waqf properties was inconsistent with the principles of equality and secularism enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
Accusing Congress of appeasement politics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said there is no place for Waqf law in the constitution, setting the stage for a stormy winter session of Parliament as the government will table the Waqf Amendment Bill.
Addressing BJP workers the Prime Minister said Congress tried to give “death penalty” to “real secularism.”.
Modi alleged that the Waqf law provided undue privileges to a specific religious community and was often exploited for political gains. “The Constitution guarantees equality before the law. But how can we achieve this when one set of laws caters exclusively to a particular community?” he questioned. He called for an overhaul of the system, asserting that such laws perpetuate divisions rather than fostering unity.
Congress formed laws to promote appeasement politics and the Waqf board is an example of it, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, as he attacked the party for its poor poll show in Maharashtra Assembly elections. PM Modi also said that the people of Maharashtra defeated negative and dynastic politics, and gave another chance to good governance.
“Congress made laws to promote appeasement politics, and the Waqf Board is an example of it. There is no place for Waqf law in the Constitution given to us by Babasaheb Ambedkar, but the Congress supported it to increase its vote bank,” PM Modi said.
