Gaza (Quds News Network)- The Gaza Strip is grappling with an escalating humanitarian disaster as severe winter storms wreak havoc on makeshift shelters housing millions of displaced Palestinians.
Torrential rain, freezing winds, and rising sea waves have left thousands exposed to the elements, amplifying the suffering of those already fleeing relentless Israeli airstrikes.
Scenes of devastation unfolded along Gaza’s coastal areas, particularly in Deir Al-Balah and Khan Younis, where powerful waves tore through fragile tents, sweeping away bedding and meager food supplies. In other camps, heavy flooding submerged shelters, leaving families stranded in harsh, unsanitary conditions.
Makeshift tents, crafted from fabric and nylon, have proven inadequate against the storm’s fury, with over 10,000 destroyed in the past 48 hours alone.
“More than 81% of the shelters in Gaza are now uninhabitable,” reported the Government Media Office, warning that the situation is reaching catastrophic levels. The office described the storm as the latest chapter in a growing humanitarian crisis stemming from Israel’s offensive and ongoing blockade of the Strip.
Region on the Brink of Disaster
The storm’s impact has exacerbated the precarious living conditions of nearly 2 million displaced Palestinians. Makeshift shelters in Gaza City, as well as facilities in central and southern regions, including Wadi al-Salqa and Rafah, have been hit particularly hard. The destruction is widespread, with entire camps inundated, leaving families without protection from the cold or access to basic necessities.
International organizations have raised alarms about the worsening situation. A senior UNRWA official warned that flooding could affect nearly half a million people in Gaza as winter progresses, compounding the region’s existing challenges, including severe food and water shortages.
In an emergency appeal, the government called on international agencies, Arab nations, and humanitarian organizations to intervene immediately. Officials highlighted the urgent need for new shelters, heating supplies, and food to sustain displaced families through the winter.
“Gaza is facing a humanitarian disaster of unprecedented scale,” the Government Media Office stated. It also condemned Israel for blocking essential relief supplies, including prefabricated housing units and additional tents, as part of its ongoing blockade.
The government’s statement emphasized that the crisis stems from a series of compounding factors, including forced displacement, targeted attacks on civilians, and a deliberate denial of humanitarian aid.
