UP: 3 Muslim youth killed in police firing over survey of Jama Masjid Sambhal

Tensions escalated on Sunday morning when a mob opposing the survey of a Mughal era Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal clashed with police, resulting death of  three Muslim youths.and several injuries.

Those killed are Bilal Ansari, Nayeem Ahmed and Nadeem Ghazi.

The violence erupted as a court-appointed commissioner and his six-member team along with a right wing Hindu mob tried to enter the mosque premises for a second survey around 7 a.m.

Eyewitnesses reported that a group of locals gathered to protest against the survey, which they claimed was unjustified and provocative. The situation quickly turned violent, with protestors pelting stones and attempting to obstruct the team’s work. In response, police deployed to the area resorted to baton charges and later fired shots to disperse the mob.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar stated, “The team was conducting the survey as per court orders when some individuals tried to disrupt the process. Police acted to restore order, but unfortunately, three people lost their lives in the confrontation.”

Authorities have imposed Section 144 in the area to prevent further escalation and deployed additional forces to maintain peace. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident to ascertain the sequence of events and accountability.

Local residents and opposition leaders have condemned the use of force, accusing the administration of heavy-handedness. Meanwhile, district officials have appealed for calm, urging all parties to cooperate with the legal process.

This marks the second survey of the mosque, following ongoing legal disputes over its ownership and usage.

Surprisingly the court has passed survey order despite he Places of Worship Act of 1991 which categoricolly says any suit or legal proceeding concerning the conversion of the religious character of any place of worship existing on August 15, 1947, pending before any court, shall abate and no fresh suit or legal proceedings shall be instituted.
